Gerald Simcoe is a native to the Lehigh Valley, where he has painted in his Northampton barn/studio since 1985. His Self Portrait has recently been displayed in the “We Fancy” show at the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery of the Art Students’ League of NY, where he studied painting from life. While gardening on Ambassador Annenberg’s Philadelphia estate, he attended classes at Longwood Gardens and grew the flowers he paints. He also breeds and sells his snowdrop hybrids.
His most recent show at the Jenkins Arboretum in Devon, PA “One Flower at a Time,” depicted portraits of the flowers he grows and paints in his Lehigh Valley barn/studio and in the wild. Studying painting from life at the Art Students’ League of NY and horticulture at Longwood Gardens, he combines both to create a unique vision of a garden artist.

From the Artist: “Whether painting a floral portrait or a large floral still life, each flower is given the attention to detail it deserves. I paint from life, sometimes in very buggy and precarious situations. Being out in nature and growing the plants into blooming beauties allows for a unique representation of them. To me, flowers are the ultimate seduction of nature.”
Gerald Simcoe has been painting in his barn/studio in the Lehigh Valley, PA since 1985. After studying art at the renowned Art Student’s League of New York, Gerald gardened for Ambassador Annenberg on his estate in Wynnewood by day and studied ornamental horticulture at Longwood Gardens by night. Gerald captures the essence of each flower’s blooms using a unique artist-horticulturist approach, cultivated by growing the flowers that serve as the subjects of his paintings. He is the recipient of the 2007 Forbes Magazine Award, with his work represented in many public and private collections.

About the Artist
After completing his education at the Art Students League of NY in the mid 1980s, Gerald Simcoe returned to Pennsylvania to explore the environs he knew best. Furthering his education at Longwood Gardens while gardening for Ambassador Annenberg on his estate, he received first-hand the experience of combining his love of gardening with his art. Painting from life is key to represent an ephemeral emotion such as the wind or light moving through a landscape.
His commissions include the Rector at St. Clement's, Philadelphia, PA, Msgr. Robert Weiss at St. Rose of Lima in Newtown, CT, and David Nitschmann of Bethlehem, PA. Shows were at Cape Cod Museum of Art & Provincetown Art Assoc. & Museum, the Art Students League of NY, and the MuZEEum in Vlissingen, NL. He was the recipient of the Forbes Magazine Award at the Salmagundi Club in 2007.
