Oil on cypress (panel 12”x18” - stand 4’ ’feet high). As displayed at the rare plant auction @ Longwood Gardens in 2013. Painting sold with white birch easel. Available by local sale on due to the size of the piece.
This painting in oils is on a native free-form Bald Cypress panel from Florida. As new highways are built, these large pieces of wood are dug from the earth intact. Being one of the most rot-proof woods, they could be hundreds of years old.
I grew these complex hybrid Paphiopedilum orchids exactly as they are arranged in one pot and chose as the background the world-famous topiary garden at Longwood, replete with the female foo dog standing guard. The normal time of bloom for these orchids is February, hence making the trek to observe this garden in snow was a rare treat this winter. As I observed different light focusses all day long with the pleasure of a few hot chocolates, I decided on this richly somber version.
